This issue showcases The Guardians in battle and gives the new readers a little idea of what each are capable of. Groot, who was blown to pieces in the last issue, is just a tiny sliver of wood, and plays as a sight gag here, with Bendis juxtapositioning Groot's calm growth with the fast-paced action of the other Guardians in battle.
Rocket Raccoon is a real stand out here. As he takes down Badoon, his quips are aplenty. New readers are sure to fall in love with the little guy in this issue if they haven't yet already.
Halfway through the issue, we are given a peek into The Negative Zone, where Star-Lord's pappy, J'son, is pretty much convincing leaders of a few different worlds that Earth is a threat to the galaxy. Thankfully, the All-Mother of Asgard (Thor's mother, maybe?) tells J'son that Earth is under her jurisdiction and that an act of war against Earth is an act of war against Asgard. At the end of the issue, the Guardians learn that they have been set up by J'son, Star-Lord's father and are put under arrest for "attacking the Earth," even though they were only protecting it.
I was very pleased with this issue, which balanced out the action of The Guardians on Earth with the backstory of J'son in The Negative Zone, setting up a conflict. The action was great and the dialogue was intriguing. I am definitely hooked on this new series and it's going to be hard to wait until the end of the month to find out what happens next. Great Review. I like how you give a rating to each Guardian.
ReplyDeleteGreat issue for Rocket (aside from the notorious "catchphrase"). Simultaneously badass *and* funny. That's why we like you, Rocky.
