Yesterday, I watched the latest episode of Ultimate Spider-man, a cartoon that comes on Disney XD. I have never watched a full episode of the show before, mainly because it definitely feels more aimed at children. I decided to download this episode on iTunes though, because it featured my favorite group of Marvel characters, (you guessed it) the Guardians of the Galaxy. I've decided for this review, I wouldn't judge the show itself. After all, I've only watched one full episode and I'm not really in the demographic either. What I will do, however, is judge how the show treated my favorite team of superheroes, (you guessed it again) the GUARDIANS OF THE FREAKIN' GALAXY! More after the jump.
The episode introduces us to Rocket Raccoon first. One of the first things I noticed was that Marvel and the makers of the show decided to give Rocket a gruff, northern American accent. This took a little bit of time to get used to, since I'm used to hearing Rocket with a Cockney accent in Marvel vs. Capcom and Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I can't help but wonder if this was done to line up with the upcoming movie. If so, we can expect Rocket to have an American accent in the film. Personally, I like the Cockney accent more, but I'm really fine with either one.

Spider-Man and Rocket |
I must admit, the show's humor made me crack a smile a few times. The dialogue is a little witty at times, and I like the way that Rocket was introduced. I was a little annoyed with Rocket getting upset about being called a raccoon. I mean, he never had a problem with it before. It was in his friggin' name! Hopefully, James Gunn does not go this direction for the film.
Once the other Guardians arrive, the action really sets in. Spider-Man and Nova join forces with them to battle Michael Korvac and the Chitauri, which was a nice nod to fans of Cosmic Marvel. All of the Guardians have their moment to shine, but once again, Groot steals the show. This will definitely be a good introduction to the Guardians for kids who have never heard of them before.

The Guardians of the...what the crap is Star-Lord wearing? |
My only critiques are Star-Lord's costume, which looks supremely horrendous, and Rocket's disdain for being called a raccoon. Other than that, I'd say the episode was pretty solid. What did you think of it? Drop a comment below! Also, check out a clip of the episode:
I had never seen Ultimate Spider-man before, and I found that I really did enjoy this episode. Did not like the Rocket errors you mentioned. As I've been telling others, though, I just considered it as a different universe version of Rocket. He got plenty of airtime and dialogue, which I liked (despite his lack of a Cockney accent, which has grown on me for the character, Steve Blum did an excellent job with it for Marvel Heroes). His personality, independent of the other errors, was well-presented (aside from eating garbage!) As far as the movie goes, I don't think James Gunn is going to take the "not really a raccoon" route because he has been extensively researching actual raccoons for the movie.
ReplyDeleteYea, and James Gunn also made a reference to Rocket's original origin, as opposed to the new Bendis "don't call me a raccoon!" origin
DeleteIf BMB mentions the USM episode on Twitter, I'll make sure to let him know Rocket *is* a raccoon. Heh.
