UPDATED: Certain Preview Pages Now Have Text.Next Wednesday (4/23/14), issue #14 of Brian Michael Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy run will be released, and it is a big one! Not only is it the 100th issue of Guardians (of all time), it will also feature three different comics in one. The three comics are written by Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Abnett, and Andy Lanning (respectively). Here's a quote from the series' editor, Mike Marts (courtesy of CBR):
Check out the preview images after the jump..."In the main story you've got Brian Bendis and Nick Bradshaw telling a captivating story about Peter Quill and the fact that the Guardians are separated and pretty much at the mercy of J-Son of Spartax. You've also got the character of Venom, who has come from Earth and is trying to figure out how he can fit into the Guardians and into the larger Galaxy. Then we've got two extremely interesting stories to wrap up the book. One is written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Gerardo Sandoval, and then another story that is written by Andy Lanning and illustrated by Phil Jimenez."

I thought Groot and Rocket met in prison in Annihilation Conquest. Must be another retcon. I don't really mind. It'd be cool if Rocket and Groot grew up together.
ReplyDeleteThey did meet in prison, but not in the MCU. The MCU and the 616 are specifically different universes, I don't think they need to or should make grand changes to the latter to fit the former.

DeleteI hope not too. It really bugs me when comics introduce a character and make no explanation of their disappearance. Angela's appearance made for an interesting conclusion to the Age of Ultron series and made for a great guest character in GOTG. I feel like we deserve a conclusion to her story. I will be very disappointed with Bendis and the editor if Angela is a no-show.
DeleteI have nothing against Bendis, i liked his Ultimate Spiderman, Daredevil and X-Men stuff, but he has that bad habit of not giving a shit about the work of previous writers thus creating various continuity error and gives a wrong characterisation to the characters. I wouldn't be surprised if Angela gets suddendly dropped from the team.
DeleteI like Bendis, but I would love to see Andy Lanning start writing again for Guardians. I feel like he has a better understanding for what makes these characters great.
DeleteAgreed 100%. I like Bendis' style overall, but I feel he doesnt quite "get" Rocket or Drax well at all, and as has been stated, he has a tendency to crap on established continuity and make his own.
DeleteI'm seeing this happening more and more all over Marvel and DC. There's this attitude that "continuity is there to further the story, the story isn't there to further continuity". But then they cross stories but don't explain how things work. If they kept books in their own story, that'd be fine. but they cross things over and reference things and we're just supposed to smile and nod and pretend it doesn't take us out of the story. And now Angela's getting the shaft. Man, I really enjoyed the attitude and element she brought to the team and the book as a whole. Yeah, part of me expected this. But still. I thought she was a good fit.
DeleteI love Bendis, I do. I don't entirely agree with everything he's done with the Guardians, but I can't help but feel a lot of that is editors and not /entirely/ him. He set up a lot of interesting story paths for the characters, and then all the big events kind of ruined it. Now we're headed to the symbiote homeworld, what the hell happened to figuring out the Cancerverse stuff?? I'm starting to feel like Marvel started this book to cash in on the inevitable GotG hype and isn't actually giving it the full attention it deserves. Some decisions they've made over it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me sometimes.
Well, there could possibly be closure with Angela in the issue. It seemed like she might cross over into All-New X-Men with the way she was looking at Jean Grey.
DeleteAlso, this comic was most definitely started to introduce comic readers to the movie version of the Guardians. Anytime a piece of art is based solely on money, the product suffers. That being said, this series has also been at many times very enjoyable. Unfortunately, many aspects of the comics have been retconned. We will have to either accept it or quit reading. Personally, I am glad that we have a monthly Guardians comic to read, even though I don't like everything about it.
Well Said, Lokein and Cameron. I feel continuity issues of comics are a major source of lost readers. Its hard to take comics as a serious form of fiction if the writers don't treat the story's continuity seriously. I am reading Game of Thrones right now, what would happen if the author Martin just stopped talking about a major character. Mutiny, that's what would happen.

Yeah, not a fan of continuity changes, either. While volume 3 is entertaining in and of itself, it's almost like Bendis is ignoring and/or rewriting every detail of Guardians volume 2. Well, Lokein saw how I feel about this continuity thing, I put a little thing together that I posted on Twitter a few days back.
DeleteI'm not even trying to be nit-picky about this. It's just... while a few continuity changes and retcons might seem harmless at first, they can snowball quickly and absolutely DESTROY a comic. Look at Spider-Man. Can anyone make heads or tails of the last 10-15 years of Spider-Man continuity? Even worse, does anyone even CARE to? It's terrible. Or look at the DCU in general. Their continuity gets so ridiculous that they end up having to reboot the entire universe every 10 years or so. And the New 52 is the most god-awful reboot/retcon I've ever seen. I love GOTG, and I just don't want to see all the greatness DnA tapped into get crapped on, forgotten about, and altogether ruined.

DeleteNice Star Wars find!! Speaking on that, its not the first time that GOTG hid a Star Wars prop in their comics. Did anybody catch the Millennium Falcon in GOTG #9. Its cleverly hidden among some space debris. Reminds me of the Empire Strikes Back when Boba Fett hid his Slave 1 ship among some space debris before pursuing the Falcon.
