This issue starts out with Peter Quill aka Star-Lord chatting up an alien woman at a bar that is most definitely reminiscent of Mos Eisley Cantina. Establishing Peter as galactic ladies man is a good idea and brings some much needed humor to the story before delving into the more serious encounter with Star-Lord's father, J'son
The banter between Peter and J'son is great. It establishes the main conflict of our story. J'son wants Peter Quill to take his place at the throne (or does he) and he also tells Star-Lord to stay away from Earth due to some galactic ordinance that nobody should step foot on earth. This, in turn, endangers the earth. I love the character development of Star-Lord so far. We know why earth is so important to him, since it was his homeland, and we know how he views his father, and how much he hates the Badoon, who killed his mother. However...
...the other Guardians don't get near as much backstory, which I understand, since they couldn't fit it all into one issue. I trust that Bendis will give each Guardian a time to shine in the upcoming issues. The big battle at the end of the issue did a little of that, but we didn't really get to see their personalities as much as I would had liked. But once again, that was mainly due to not having enough pages for each character. From now on, I will rate each Guardian based on their general awesomeness and how much time they were given in each issue.
Star-Lord: 4/5
Groot: 3/5
Gamora: 4/5
Drax: 2/5
Rocket: 3/5
Bonus: Iron Man 1/5
I seriously hope Iron Man is given something good to do in the future. But hey, if he can bring in new fans, I'm all for it.
Overall Rating: 4/5
I agree with this review. It wasn't perfect, of course, but I found it was an impressive start to the series proper, and it did make me excited for future issues, which have so far not disappointed.
