Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1 Review

Released: February 27th, 2013
Written by Brian Michael Bendis

If this first issue is any indication of the quality of the new series, I'm stoked! This first one tells the tale of Star-Lord's origin. It's a new-ish origin, but it definitely makes the series more accessible to new readers. For those who don't know who the Guardians are, this issue will peak their interest. The artwork for this issue is phenomenal. It has a very cinematic feel.Without giving too much away, here is a short synopsis for the issue:

Most of it takes place on earth, thirty years ago, at the home of Star-Lord's mother. When a strange ship crashes outside her rural home, she finds a bloody, battered man crawling out the ship. She takes him in and helps him repair his ship, he tells her that he's from space and long story short: they fall in love and create Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord.

Part of me wonders if the movie will start out with this same origin. In my opinion, it would be a great way to give Peter Quill, some background to people who have no idea who he is. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing how he got into space and met the rest of the Guardians, in the movie. I'm sure they'll go over all of that.

Classic Mask

One issue with this new series is the question over whether or not Star-Lord will have his classic helmet/mask. I'm hoping they don't lose it completely. That mask is one of the reasons I fell in love with Guardians of the Galaxy. I've always thought it was an awesome design. The quality of this comic, however, eases the pain of losing the mask a little. It's really a great issue and I'd recommend picking it up, whether you're a longtime fan of the Guardians or a newcomer.
