Throughout Bendis' run, there have been two major conflicts. The first one is on a small level, between Peter Quill and his old man, J'son. Bendis has made it apparent with the last few issues (and even Gamora's digital comic) that Peter Quill detests his father's code of ethics and lifestyle. Peter obviously has no interest in becoming the King of Spartax, mainly due to his loyalties to Earth, the place where he was born. It doesn't make it any better that J'son is friendly with the Badoon, an alien race that murdered Peter's mother in cold blood.
The other major conflict that has been slowly building is the conflict between J'son and the 'Council of the Galactic Empires,' a galactic U.N. meeting, if you will. These scenes have been weaved throughout the past three issues, and though they may have seemed redundant in issues one and two, they reach somewhat of a crescendo in issue three. Here, the members of the Council seems to have enough of J'son's condescension. As one member points out, he talks to them as if he is "their king." As a reader, I can't help but agree. So far, J'son has been arrogant beyond measure, but I think that his motives are somewhat pure. J'son seems to want some sort of galactic harmony, but the way he goes about it is very dictator-like. Without politicizing this comic too much, I can see some parallels between Spartax and our own U.S. government.
The Guardians are given plenty of great moments to shine in this issue, but I must say, Groot has never been better. There's a few great moments of interactions between the different team members that goes on to further establish their bonds for newer readers. It isn't just the new readers that get treats in this issue. Bendis even throws in references to some of our favorite past team members from the Abnett and Lanning run. My only nitpick is that Rocket still is shouting "Blam, murdered you!" which has an unmatched ability to make me cringe.
The ending to this issue will definitely leave your mouth watering for more. I'm happy to say that Guardians of the Galaxy is still going strong. I would even go as far as saying this has been the most enjoyable chapter since point one. I'd like to know what all of you thought about the issue.
