Fan Theories: When Star-Lord Met Yondu

One of our readers, Shane Harper, pointed out something that most blogs (including us) have overlooked in the recently released set pics of Yondu. Although, we could be wrong, it seems that Yondu is wearing a Star-Lord symbol on his coat. What could this mean?

Of course, we've got our theories, and we've got to admit, they may be a stretch. Don't read if you like to get butthurt over theories. However, we've got some evidence that just might give them some credibility. Read more after the jump!

We know from Kevin Feige's recently released quotes that Star-Lord has lived in space since the mid-80's. This is peculiar, since Chris Pratt was born in 1979. If Guardians of the Galaxy indeed takes place around the same time as the other Marvel Phase 2 films, that means Peter Quill (Star-Lord) must have gone into space when he was just a kid. How is this possible?

My guess is that Yondu is involved in some way. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if "Yondu's Crash" takes place in the 80's on Meredith Quill's farm. Further evidence of this is in Peter Quill's rap sheet (pictured below) from the D23 footage. His only associate is none other than...Yondu Udonta.

Who are the guys pointing guns at Yondu? Could they be the Badoon? Maybe. We know that the Badoon were the biggest enemy of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, which Yondu was a member of. We also know that Yondu is something of a pirate in this film. Could Yondu have taken over a Badoon ship that just so happened to be heading to Earth to kill Peter Quill, son of J'son (or Jason).

Of course, this is all merely speculation, but it's fun to think about. What do you think? Does Yondu sort of "adopt" Peter Quill in the GOTG film and take him into space? Drop your thoughts below.

  1. I think they're all very interesting theories, and I think you guys could really be onto something. Also worth noting is that Yondu's coat is very similar to the one Star-Lord is seen wearing several times in the leaked footage.

Another thing that I think could support your Badoon theory is that in the photos from today's set, one of the armed men is wearing a helmet that leaves his mouth exposed, showing that he has what looks like a mask made from the material they use for green-screen on underneath the hood. This makes me think that maybe, what little of face is showing, will have some CGI work done to it in post-production, and, considering just how much of the effects for the other aliens are being done practically, it leads me to believe that whatever work will be done to his face may have been a little too complicated or technical for practical effects. That's all pure speculation on my part, but I think it could be considered further proof (to a certain extent) of the Badoon, or at least that they are from an alien species of some sort. Then again there are others with their heads exposed and helmetless, so... Maybe they are the assassins that Gareth sends to kill Peter and Meredith.

    1. I noticed the green-screen material too. I think you're right. The exposed heads could just be off-camera shots of them airing out their sweat-covered heads, or it could be a mixed species group. Either way, I'm with you on this idea.

  2. Young Peter Quill spends his summer playing an arcade game that's actually a test to find pilots suitable to fight a galactic war. Yondu comes to earth to tell Peter that he's the Last Starfighter.

    Okay, maybe not.

Wild speculation. But I'm going to say... Having found out about his son, fearing the Badoon might act on this information should it get out, Yondu is hired on the down-low by J'son to retrieve his family before the Badoon get to them. Evil Uncle Gareth informs the Badoon is hopes they'll kill the human scum. ("I was next in line to the throne... until the little hair-ball was born." Every uncle to a Prince turns into Scar from Loin King...) Yondu and the Badoon arrive at the same time. Too late to save Peter's mother, Yondu rushes in at the nick of time, grabs up Peter, 'commandeers' a Badoon ship, and whisks off with Peter whom now sees Yondu as his protector, clinging to him as 'safe place' as children are wont to do during times of loss. Now! Yondu can't shake the kid and becomes like a favorite Uncle to Peter, bailing him out of jail, loaning him money for a new starcruiser, and teaches him the way of the force. And by force, I, of course, mean piracy.

Maybe even after Yondu delivers Peter to his father, Young Prince Quill blames King-Dead-Beat-Dad for his mother's death, and stows away on Yondu's ship as Yondu's leaving Spartax, so Peter's actually RAISED in piracy, with his Dad trying to get him to accept responsibility and become his heir every time he's in trouble with the authorities. Which Peter rebukes and stomps off to do something even more reckless and stupid to upset his father.

    1. I sincerely hope this is the route they would go with the movie. It would be a nice mixture of both of Star-Lord's origins and the original Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder if Yondu will still be from the future.

    2. I keep going back to that symbol... maybe Yondu starts out as an officer for Peter's Dad's army (thus the symbol's relation to StarLord). Maybe Peter and Yondu do form a bond, and it interferes with J'Son bonding with Peter, gets Yondu in trouble and J'Son fires/discharges Yondu, who turns to piracy as a means of support, with Peter stowing away. Either way, I am so pumped for this movie! Lol

    3. I really hope Yondu doesn't turn out to be a bad guy. I could see Marvel pulling something like that to surprise people (The Mandarin, anyone?)

  3. Don't you notice that yondu looks like his whistling in those pics I wonder if he takes out that guy behind him with an arrow he shot before walking out. Tt would be like a funny scene.

    1. That would be awesome. I hope that Yondu uses the bow and arrow in the film. He wouldn't be Yondu without it.

    2. I don't think that the jacket star-lord has on is the same as the one yondu has on. I'm thinking the one star-lord has on is his fathers and maybe that's all he has form him since he left and also maybe there's a transmitter in the jacket or something important that the father left in the jacket that brings these aliens coming to earth.

    3. They seem very similar, but I don't think they are the same one. Maybe Yondu takes Peter shopping for jackets?

    4. I noticed it appeared that he was whistling as well. Pretty awesome. Maybe they will use those badges instead of the star shaped ones from the original team. I would like to see the original badge at some point though.

  4. I think Yondu is going to be the Obi-Wan to Peter.

  5. I'm wondering if they're gonna make Yonda Kree. He's blue after all and it's another way of bringing the Kree into the movie.
