C2E2, Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, is an exciting place. Arguably one of the biggest Expos for the area. But we Galaxians got a little extra excitement from the last panel from Marvel Comics, 'Next Big Thing'. The panel talked about Marvel's 'Women of Marvel' run of new female-led series, introduced Marvel's "Young Guns" and discussed numerous comics. You can read the about the entire panel over at CBR.
But the really exciting news for Galaxians came in the form of some upcoming news teases, and some awesome cover art. Check it out.
"Scottie Young spoke about his Rocket Raccoon series where the fan favorite character is accused of murders he didn't commit. "Rocket knows he's murdered people, but he hates being accused of murdering people he didn't kill," said the artist. The book will be a "big, intergalactic space romp" with the "bromantic" relationship between the character and Groot being explored as villain Macho Gomez gets into the mix."
"The panel revealed the new lineup of "Young Guns" being promoted by the publisher including Sara Pichelli on "Guardians of the Galaxy,"
"The panel spoke about Nick Bradshaw's (of "Wolverine & The X-Men,") incoming run on "Guardians of the Galaxy" starting with issue #16 which breaks the team out of their traditional structure."
The 100th anniversary special for "Guardians of
the Galaxy" will be by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz with art by Gustao
Duarte under a cover by David Lopez. That one-shot will feature Silver
Galactus and the return of original Guardians member Charlie 27. The
book will ship in July.
"The Legendary Star-Lord" #1 cover by Steve McNiven
"The panel announced July's new "Legendary
Star-Lord" series by Sam Humphries and Paco Medina. "Sam has got a great
story planned for it. It's epic. It's like a Western in outer space
with humor and hi-jinx and the fate of the entire galaxy resting in his
hands," Executive Editor Mike Marts said about the book. The cover to issue #1 will be by
Steve McNiven with variants for the issue by the new Young Guns."
"Young Guns" is a promotional initiative from Marvel Comics spotlighting rising artists. All six new Young Guns are individually
illustrating a variant cover to July's "The Legendary Star-Lord" #1, and
will appear June 14-15 at ReedPOP's new New York City convention,
Special Edition: NYC.

Those covers are amazing. Gorgeous artwork. The 100th anniversary special is intriguing! Silver Galactus? Is that Gamora in Star-Lord's MCU uniform? What armor is IronMan wearing? Charlie 27 and Major Victory? Drax and Rocket in old uniforms? Wasn't Macho Gomez the villain from Despicable Me 2? (Kidding!)
Which cover is your favorite? I've only found 5 of the Star-Lord covers, but if I can get a definite list of all 7 (6 Young Guns and McNiven), we'll post them all here.
Yay! More pandering to the movie! Keep it classy Marvel.
ReplyDeleteI feel like it's a double-edged sword. On one hand, the Guardians and Cosmic Marvel are getting more mainstream. On the other, it's leaving us pre-Bendis Cosmic Marvel fans in the dust.

Oh well, more GotG is fine by me. Looks like Stark has a new Space Hulkbuster. Don't forget the news that Angela is Thor's sister. I really hope they dont write her out of the Guardians.

DeleteIt sounds like Original Sin is going to be all about twists and retcons. I hear Stark is responsible for the Hulk as well as Angela being Thor's sister.
DeleteI agree that I hope she's not written out of Guardians, and Tom Breevoort's Tumblr posted a question someone asked about it, and he said she's still in the Guardians. So. Yay! I'm okay with her moonlighting in Thor books. GotG and Thor are my favorite Marvel books, so I'm happy with that. And honestly, while the mysterious and out-of-place angel is cool and all, if they want to keep interest in the character, they're gonna have to do more with her. Throwing something that big at her will certain keep her in the limelight a while.
Also, it looks like #14 was the 100th issue, but there will also be a 100th issue anniversary special... Kinda like Guardians of the Galaxy dvd/blu-ray combo, and then the Collector's Edition of Guardians of the Galaxy on dvd/blu-ray combo with extra special features. You're gonna own both! lol

Angela has definitely felt aimless since arriving at Marvel. Pairing her with Thor is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteWait, why is Angela cool? i just ordered her first GOTG appearance from the library, but i don't understand her place on the team. She wields medeival weapons on a space age team, so... what?
ReplyDeleteLike the rest of the team, she's a misfit. Literately, out of place. Without a home. Groot uses his body, while Drax and Gamora both use physical weapons more often than not, so I'm not seeing the confusion there.
DeleteAngela is a strong, fiercely independent woman to whom Gamora feels a kindred spirit. More of those can't be anything but a good thing! Though, I'll grant you, she's another physically-inclined, strong-silent-type heavier hitter, and the team isn't lacking in those. But this team shouldn't be about following a formula and having a nice, rounded out group with different but complimenting power sets.
This group, despite being outcasts and pariahs and freaks and the black sheep, finds a family in each other. Through that bond they decide to take it upon themselves to be the guardians of the galaxy, the protectors of entire krutackin' universe, no matter how odd and unruly their little team is.
My point is, don't worry so much about Angela fitting into a box or a mold or a formula of what a team should be. Because our Guardians are there to defy and deny every thrice-d'ast rule that's placed in front of them. Simply put, Angela is Guardian. And that's enough to make her flarkin' awesome.
@Lokein, I agree with you on all the character aspects. I think Angela is the strongest character on the team hands down, and I agree with your last paragraph especially. I only think that thee WEAPONS she uses are out of place.
ReplyDeleteI can see that, we do see Drax and Gamora use laser-bladed weapons and guns occasionally. But I'm rooting for a huge update to Angela, I want a more current-Gamora-like armor. We can definitely upgrade her weapons! lol
