Possible Confirmation of Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Plus Solo Spin-Off Films

Devin Leonard of Bloomberg recentely got a chance to visit with Kevin Feige and James Gunn in the Guardians of the Galaxy edit bay. In the editorial, Leonard teased seeing a well-known villain appear on the screen. Here's an excerpt:
"Gunn freezes a frame of an imposing-looking villain any serious comic book fan would recognize instantly. He sits on a rocket-powered throne. Feige sees something on the screen that he doesn’t like. The evildoer needs to be farther away in the frame so he looks more imperious he says.

“I don’t know,” says Gunn. “I think it’s going to look cool, man.”

“You just don’t want him to feel petty in that way,” Feige says. “I think it’s a fine line.”

“How do you think it comes off as petty here?” Gunn says.

“He’s so damn close,” Feige says.

“Yeah,” concedes Gunn. “I think I’m going to have him floating in space.”

Feige is concerned about the throne, too. He points at the base. “Those don’t need to be rockets,” he says. “Maybe gravity disks?” Feige says he’ll check back later.

In the hallway he extracts a pledge not to name the bad guy. “That could not be a bigger spoiler,” Feige says."
The villain is undoubtedly Thanos, whose casting has yet to be announced. However, it appears that we will in fact see the villain at some point in the film. Also, in the article, Leonard talked about the possibility of Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off films, saying, "Iger would like to replicate the success of The Avengers with other Marvel teams. He says Marvel could potentially spin off members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, which include Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon, in their own features."

All very interesting stuff. Head on over to Bloomberg for the rest of the article. Who would you like to see get their own spin-off film? Drop us a comment below!

  1. I can't see the members of the team in a solo movie, except maybe Starlord.

  2. I dunno... I could see a Rocket/Groot movie working. Drax and Gamora are longshots, I agree. But really... a Rocket/Groot movie, sort of in the vein of the FCBD comic about Rocket that's coming out, could be a hit.

    1. I agree. Rocket and Groot will have so much mainstream appeal. If Lucasfilm is making a Han Solo/Chewbacca film, I could see a Rocket/Groot film too.

    1. So would I! Rocket and Groot on Halfworld could be a really fun movie.

  4. I would not want spin-off films of the Guardians until after "Avengers 3" ends Phase 3 and Phase 4 will start with a spin-off film series on the Guardians.

  5. Definitely Nova if we see the more traditional version of him, although I have a feeling it might just be this more army-like space cops version that we've seen so far. Not that I have a problem with that.

Obviously a Rocket/Groot movie is the way to go. I couldn't really see any of the other Guardians besides Star-Lord in a solo film.

    1. I have a feeling if they make a Nova film, the costume will be closer to the comics. There's probably a reason the Nova costumes are low-key in Guardians. Saving all the good designs for later.

    2. But if GotG establishes them as cops rather than superheroes, how are they going to explain the sudden change if they do a standalone movie? I'm not saying it isn't possibly, I just think that at this point in time, with the information that we have, a Nova movie looks highly unlikely. He's my all-time favorite superhero, so I want it to happen, but I also want it to stay consistent with the universe. Of course there are tons of ways they could bring in the superhero Novas, but at this time I'm not sure how they'd do it.

    3. They could explain it with different jobs within the Nova Corps? Different outfits depending on task. I would love a NOVA movie too, and with Marvel pushing Nova so much in comics (Nova, New Warriors, and Original Sin) I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a Nova movie. Just don't know if it would be Richard Rider or Sam Alexander.

    4. I have it all figured out. How a Nova movie could work. Sometime during GOTG Rohamn Dey ranks up to Centurion, complete with classic Nova look (they could say his earlier rank was Denarian or Corpsman). Then during a mission to Earth he is killed by Zorr and gives the Nova Centurion suit and powers to Richard Rider. The reason I say it'll be Rich is because of Dey himself. I mean, if they did Sam why include Dey in the first place. I love Dey as a character but the thing he's known for is giving Rich his powers.

  6. Also, I guess Cameron was right that Feige was denying Thanos's casting to keep it a secret after reading this.

  7. I knew it! Kevin Feige is really directing the Marvel films all along. The directors are puppets.
