I think it's a given that he will change size or at least alter his form in the movie. The first official artwork featuring that rapsheet shot (showcasing the final costume) showed silhouttes of the Guardians in battle pose (Star Lord wearing his helmet, Gamora wielding her sword), and Groot's looking all viney and massive there.
